When Doctor Travel magazine started this advertising campaign in Russia some alert citizens perceived it as racist. You see, the woman on the ad makes fun of black people. Actually as a Russian I can’t see what this ad has to do with dark skin people. First, this is a specialty magazine for people who want to spend vacations on health resorts or spas. Second, the ad plays on archaic images of women with ugly greenish health masks. Only in this case the mask is made of chocolate. Why chocolate? It’s an allusion on a popular Russian idiom – ‘to be in chocolate’ means ‘to be ok’. One expert explained that very long ago some white jazzmen painted their faces in exactly the same manner to look like black. I remember in one of the old movies from 30’s I saw something like that. Hmm, some people have really wild imagination.
It reminds me of one joke. Husband, “Dear, you are as beautiful as a goldfish”. Wife (aside): “Goldfish means fish, fish means pike, pike means predator, predator means wolf, wolf means dog.” (yells) “Stop calling me bitch, bastard!”
